July’s ice cream month! Which kicks off with “Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day” on the 1st…

What a wonderful kickoff for National Ice Cream Month!
All of America should say THANK YOU to 19th-century African American confectioner and caterer Mr. Augustus Jackson (b. 1808) for the fab flavors he brought onto the scene — think peach, strawberry, mint, and more 🍓🍑🍃 — plus a series of scientific innovations that made ice cream more delicious and accessible to all! 🍨🙌🏾
“A former White House cook, Jackson became a Philadelphia caterer dubbed ‘the father of ice cream.’ He created many flavors and figured out the best way to transport the frozen treat. One of the city’s wealthiest African Americans, he supplied ice cream to [various] establishments.”

You’ll hear him mentioned in this short-but-sweet 👂🏽➡️ TFG ICE CREAM EPISODE 🎧👈🏾 from my food history podcast series…
You’ll also learn a bit more about Mr. Jackson in the “Chasing Flavor with Chef Carla Hall” Ice cream episode I’m in that’s been streaming on HBO’s MAX . That’s right — as a featured Culinary Historian who chats with Carla in the ice cream (and another!) episode — I drop knowledge from a “uniquely American” perspective that most “mainstream” food historians won’t bother to ever tell you. I’d like to host a real time interactive watch party of the episode with my Patreon Peeps THIS MONTH and on the SPILL app so be sure to sign up to stay in the loop on that scoop! …
